The Lord burning the earth…

His minions cackling as they devoured humankind…

Everyone she knew, not just those she loved but also those she barely cared about yet still recognized… dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead—

Someone’s scream woke Aurelia, and she bolted up, only to collapse back onto her pillow.

“Aurelia!” Flynn was by her side, barely visible in the vague light from the window. “It’s all right. Everything’s all right.”

She realized that scream had been hers, and she squeezed her eyes. The visions kept scorching her mind, vivid and real and unbearable. “No, it’s not. You can’t tell me it’s only a nightmare because you know I’m a precog.” She opened her eyes and stared at the ceiling. “I saw the Lord triumphing again, and you can’t tell me it won’t happen.”

He gave an encouraging smile. “Yes, I can. We stopped your vision of Connor’s death from coming true, didn’t we?”

She bobbled her head against her pillow. It occurred to her that the last time she’d seen him in her room, the sun had been shining, and now, it was pitch dark outside. “What’re you doing here? How long have you been here?”

“I’m on guard duty.” He leaned back in the chair he’d apparently moved to her bedside. “Making sure the Firedragon doesn’t try to take on Calhoun’s entire army by herself while sick.”

That was a bunch of baloney. He knew she wasn’t stupid… he knew she knew.

An odd feeling spread through her chest at the idea that he’d stayed by her side all this time for no reason at all, except that he cared.

“Is someone guarding Connor this tightly?” she asked sarcastically.

Flynn let out a small laugh. “He’s not as stubborn as you. We trust him to stay put. And he wouldn’t cause as much damage if he got out.”

Aurelia longed to visit her brother’s room and see how he was doing. She had a feeling if she demanded that Flynn help her over, he would. But the idea of leaning against someone while she hobbled like a ninety-year-old was too ridiculous to consider. Especially since, given what had happened the last time she’d gotten up, there was a good chance she’d pass out again and have to be carried like a princess back to bed.

“I hate being weak,” she grumbled.

“You’re not weak, Aurelia,” Flynn leaned closer. “You’re ill. That’s different.”

“‘Aurelia’…” For some reason, her exhausted, curse-addled mind fixated on the sound of her given name. “You know, hardly anyone calls me by my name. Most folks call me ‘Firedragon.’”

His eyes widened. “I can change it if you want—”

“I didn’t say I had a problem with it.” Her lips twitched. “Just find it interesting, that’s all. Why do you do it?”

He shrugged. “I mean, whenever I heard of you before we met, you were always ‘the Firedragon,’ a near-mythical champion. And then… I dunno… I met you. And you’re a real person, not just the famous figure from the Triumvirate’s propaganda. I guess that’s why my mind went to ‘Aurelia’ back when we were introduced, and you never corrected me, so I stuck with it.
